The Big, Bad and Ugly February 15-16 The Rock, Morro Bay , Ca

This years Big Bad and Ugly was a fun event, as Morro Rock graced the competition with head high (+) surf. Coldwater showed with a team of 21 competitors. Five Coldwater members made the finals:

Roy Sheehe (6 th Men 19 and under)
Tommy Dane (2 nd Men 20-29)
Dan Low (6 th Men 30-39)
Kris Schuman (5 th Men 40-49)
Bernadette Barbante (6 th Women 30+)

Many other members advanced to the semis, these included: Lorenzo Jaquias, Steve Walters, Tom Neth, Christian Wadman and Rich Potter. Casey Landry (surfing for Ventura Huh?) finished 4 th in the Dogmeat Division.

A big Mahalo to Ron Etz, Don Low, Christain Wadman and Lorenzo Jaquias (and his brother) for making dinner. You are the reason the Coldwater Surf Club walked away with the Spirt of Aloha award.

Once again a huge Thanks to Val Wright and the Estero Beach Surf Club for a fun day in the water and on the links.

Gathering of the Tribes - January 4-5 - Church

January brought the New Year and the first coalition sanctioned event of 2003: The Gathering of the tribes. Coldwater mustered an impressive team of 23 competitors that was greeted in San Clemente by sunny, 80-degree weather and a building swell. Ron Etz and company used the event as a reason to get a private tour of the Hobie factory in Dana Point. Several members busted out the pool toys and surfed both the long and short board events. These iron men/women included Casey Landry, Heather Hyde, Kira Gelineau, John Hadley, Lissa Ross, Monica Lee and Greg Foster.
The Gathering of the Tribes marked a coming out party for the Coldwater Surf Club, as they placed 8th out of over 17 clubs. This is Coldwaters first top ten finished in a coalition-sanctioned event. Taking home hardware was:

Tommy Dane (3rd Men 20-29),
Heather Hyde (1st Women 29 Under Short Board, 6th Women 29 Under Long Board)
Kira Gelinau (4th Women 29 Under Short Board, 4th Women 29 Under Long Board)
Kris Schuman (4th Masters).

Also scoring points by advancing to the Semi Finals were: Woody Robinson, Monica Lee and Beth O'Rourke.

Coldwater gathered further notoriety at he event from the surfboard provided by Stickman Surfboards. The beautiful replica of a BING David Nuuhiwa Light Weight had the Coldwater Logo and was conspicuously displayed and promoted throughout the weekend. It was the constant source discussion, gawking and additional raffle ticket purchases. A huge Mahalo goes out to Vic Otten and Stickman Surfboards. Those that did not advance were treated to a spectacular free surf session Saturday afternoon at Lowers. The weekend and event can best be summarized by one club member. As I paddled past an arm weary, exhausted, but smiling Karen Demski she said: I just had the best 5 hour surf session of my life. Many thanks again to Mark Calkins, Jack Sutton and the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association for a memorable event. And most of all thanks again to the almighty "Shu" for putting together this event.

First Annual "S Turns" Contest - February 15, 2003 - Kahana, Maui

Woody Robinson entered the First Annual "S Turns" contest for kids at a break called S Turns located in Kahana. There were over 100 kids in all the classes that ranged in age from 7 to 17. He was one of 36 kids in the 10
to 13 class. He placed first in his heat, entering into one of two semi-final heats. He placed first in his semi-final heat and advanced to the finals where he placed 4th overall. Kids had come from various islands to compete in this event although most of them were from Maui. Woody was riding a board that was shaped by a really nice local guy named Bruno who
after the contest asked Woody to surf on his team. Woody, to say the least, is a very happy camper.

Surf Tribes - December 7, 2002 - Capitola Santa Cruz

For those of you who weren't there and we know who are, all we can do is laugh, because this event rocked. After an early morning rise to drive to del mar beach to look at close out after close out it was voted to move the event to Capatola. The morning started off small with waves in the shoulder high range. But when everyones second heat came around the waves were pumping. The sets were a couple of feet over head with left and rights firing off. The placings are a little hazy so if I miss someone you can contact me or tar and feather me at Morro Bay.

Young Men: Woody Robinson 2nd
Men: Dewey Peterson 4th
Sr. Men: Casey Landry 1st, Chris Wadman 2nd, Dan Low 5th
Masters: John "da' man" Pita 2nd
Codgers: Rich Potter 1st.

I know at this point you're saying damn that allot of cwsc members walking away with hardware, well you saw it here.

Kahuna Kapuna -September 28, 2002 - Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica

After a week of inconsistent surf, the Kahuna Kapuna was blessed with sunny skies nicely formed 2 to 3 foot waves breaking all along Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica. For the 80 plus contestants there were enough waves to ride, manageable for the least skillful and good enough to show off the best. Coldwater member Monica Lee surfed well placing: 1st place in the women's 35-40 age group (longboard) and 3rd place in the women's 35-45 age group (Shortboard). Kris Shuman Placed: 3rd in Future Kapunas (45 plus Shortboard) and 4th Men 45 - 50 longboard. John Pita placed 3rd in the Salami heat.

12 th Annual Big Chill Out October 26, 2002 - Linda Mar Beach , Pacifica

Thanks to our closest neighboring club for yet another memorable event. We had a great turnout (25 Coldwater competitors) for rather poor conditions. Throughout the low tide morning (thats right low tide Linda Mar), rain and onshore winds battered solid head high close outs (better described as 5 foot by 5 foot, brown, sand-filled meat hooks). After a couple of competitors had body parts rearranged, the Pedro Point club moved the event down the beach to the Keating boat ramp.

This event is what it's all about good friends, great competition and fat grinds. The spread was awesome to say the least, more food then people unlike most events where you're left scrounging for leftovers. Dewey "Deuce" Peterson brought home some forth place hardware - Congratulations Dewey!!. We also dominated the salami heat: 1 st Kris Schuman, 2 nd Natalie Pepper, 4 th Heather Hyde, 5 th Spencer Jones. We lost Tommy Dane to a knee injury the Friday before the event while he was surfing Ocean Beach with Casey. They claimed that it was well worth the paddle out with overhead sets and off shore conditions. Tommy get well soon. Pat Orr, Lorenzo Jaquis and Casey Landry made it the Semi Finals.

Thanks again to Greg Cochran, Izzy and the Pedro Point Surf Club for a great event.

7 th Annual Rhyn Noll Classic - October 5th & 6th 2002 - Crescent City , Ca

A Coldwater favorite - The Noll classic, never great conditions but always a good time. Our members have been competing in this event since it began seven years ago. This year we had small mob of members (11 total) who took the long drive to the northern most part of our state. The conditions were a little messy on Sat with an on shore wind and wave in the 3-4 foot range, Sunday everything cleared up and the surf was a lot of fun. Tommy Dane placed first in both the men's division and the superheat (competition among all of last year's first place winners). Don "Big Daddy" Martin who has been going underground recently placed 4th in the really old guys division. Coldwaters youngest members also brought home hardware (signed by Greg Noll himself) in the Menehune division, Daniel Schuman (9) finished 5th and Shannon Etz (8) finished 6 th . Congratulations Tommy, Don, Daniel and Shannon!!

C-Street Amateur Longboard Championships 2002:

Not a whole lot to say about this event. The surf was as bad as you can get and still hold an event. The wind never stopped. The weather stayed cool the entire time, which made sitting at the venue even more unbearable. We had a couple of members, Tommy Dane and Casey Landry, who competed in the event. Tommy did well advancing to the quarter finals, while Casey placed sixth in the men's division. Congratulations Casey!!
